Hello, my name is Celine Hajjar, Founder of NAFSI.

I've always been passionate about design and self-expression in the fashion industry. Born in Canada to Lebanese parents, I was surrounded by artists, musicians, and Middle Eastern grace - all of which formed the basis of NAFSI's aesthetic. I had zero educational experience in the fashion industry before I moved to Dubai to pursue a career in fashion. I actually studied Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa!

Apart from [my work], I love to dance. I turn my troubles into rhythm and let it out in dance. It’s my output. I’m so present when I dance, I forget everything. I think that is why meditation is so important; it keeps you and your mind in the present moment - which is what dance does for me. So whatever it is that makes you feel present, find it and do it!

Tell us all about your company. What products do you offer?

NAFSI is a line of sustainable luxury. I create various collections of basics as well as limited quantities of unique pieces that are handcrafted. Everything is always sustainably sourced and ethically made. 100% of fabric proceeds support newcomer women in Canada, and one tree is planted for every item sold. Nafsi is an Arabic word for myself, my soul, because change starts from within.

How did you get the idea or concept for your company? What was your mission at the outset? Was there anything in particular that inspired you to start at the time you did?

I have books and design sketches that date back 15+ years ago. Thrifting clothes and creating new pieces has always been a hobby of mine. In 2015, I had the great opportunity to go to Dubai where I began my journey in the fashion industry. Although it was very insightful, I was quickly made aware of the detrimental impacts the [fashion] industry has on the environment and the people behind our clothes. That's when I began researching alternatives and learning about sustainability in the industry - and eventually applied these learnings to launch NAFSI.

Have your past personal & professional experiences helped you to run your company? How?

Definitely. Working in the industry in Dubai has exposed me to different market strategies, press and media in the region, as well as the differences in running a business in various parts of the world and catering to different audiences.

What's your definition of success? Freedom.

What advice would you give to a woman starting out in your industry or starting her own company/organization?

Don't be shy, ask for help when necessary, speak up, let passion fuel you, and KEEP ON GOING.

Describe yourself in ONE word. NAFSI
